Photography Manager Rob Oates | BALLANTYNE Photography, oversees a tightly-scripted program designed to capture all the action, whether it’s on land, sea or in the air. When international journalist Kaci Cronkhite visited the Photography Centre at the 2017 festival, she exclaimed: ‘This is, hands down, the most professional operation I have seen anywhere in the world!’ We agree, and we’re very grateful for the amazing work our photojournalists do.

“A special talent.”
Rob Oates has the gift, the ’eye’ that separates the keen amateur from the inspirational photographer. His professionalism, his incredible patience and his complete command of the camera make for images that stir the heart. At the Australian Wooden Boat Festival in Hobart, Tasmania there are many wonderful things to look at. Capturing those pictures in a way that allows others to share the emotion as well as the image is a special talent and Rob has it to burn.

“Managing this aspect of the festival was first class”
Ballantyne Photography managed a team of forty photographers for the MyState Australian Wooden Boat Festival in February 2015. The festival is the largest of its type and attracts over 500 boats and 200,000 visitors over four days. An important part of the festival is the Maritime Marketplace consisting of nearly 100 commercial display spaces showcasing products and services from around sixty marine businesses.
A critical aspect of producing this event is having commercial participants covered by photographers. Professional quality images makes the job of managing relationships with our customers much better and encourages them to participate in the next festival.
Rob managed his team extremely well and was able to cover commercial displays as well as sponsors, exhibitors, speakers and other events and attractions while also capturing the spirit of the festival. He reported to festival management promptly and had many superb images available for various purposes shortly after the event.
Rob's efforts in managing this aspect of the festival was first class and made our role in dealing with a large number of commercial partners much easier. We look forward to working with Ballantyne Photography again at the next festival and would happily recommend them to event managers.
Rob Oates from BALLANTYNE Photography provided a comprehensive and most professional program of photographic support to me during the 2015 MyState Australian Wooden Boat Festival.
Rob not only provided some outstanding images for use in our event marketing campaign, he also coordinated other photographers ensuring all major aspects of the festival were covered.
In addition, Rob also coordinated opportunities for accredited media representatives to collect their own visual material where requested.
Rob’s images were used extensively in our media coverage, both on-line and print media, before, during and after the 2015 festival.
Pre-festival images were selected from Rob’s 2013 collection – our previous biennial festival.
Since the 2015 MyState Australian Wooden Boat Festival, Rob’s images have been used in some high-profile, special-interest magazines both nationally and internationally, to great acclaim by journalists and editors alike.

“Everything we wanted and more.”
Rob Oates from Ballantyne Photography was engaged by the 3RMM Organising Team from the Port Macquarie Rowing Club, to be the principal photographer for our August 2015 Three Rivers Mini Marathon held on the Mid North Coast of NSW.
Why did we use him .. ???
Because we had previously engaged him for the 2014 event and his photos and coverage were first class. His attention to detail extends not just to the photographs themselves but also to the pre planning and discussion about what the client is hoping to achieve from his photographs. The client is therefore fully engaged in establishing the brief and Rob is always keen to ensure both parties agree on the type and style of photographs to be provided once the event is finalised.
Did he deliver .. ???
Yes indeed .. a big thumbs up. Once again Rob was able to capture both the atmosphere and subtleties of our race with some wonderfully composed high quality images. He made sure to invest his time at all stages of the event including the pre race dinner and organisation on the days before the big race and then of course the race day itself. He was the first to arrive on race day and also one of the last to leave thereby ensuring he missed nothing and also left nothing to chance.
Furthermore in the days following the event he was quick to spend time with us to view all of the images taken and talk through how we might use the photographs for subsequent media and promotion releases.
Will we use him again .. ???
That’s Easy. Yes we will, both for the 2016 running of our 3RMM and for any other PR or promotion activities that the Port Macquarie Rowing Club decide to undertake.
Rob is a true professional who also happens to be passionate about what he does and this translates into a great working relationship and subsequent delivery of a range of high quality and varied images as previously agreed with the client.
